With all the hype out there regarding CBD as the next panacea, or cure-all, people can only reach an informed decision if they have an understanding of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and its role in overall health and well-being. Thousands of scientific articles exist on the internet documenting the presence of endocannabinoid receptors, ligands (molecules that bind to receptors) and enzymes that regulate them on virtually every cell in the body, and how the ECS plays a role in modulating almost all bodily functions. There is a lot of information to digest and apply to you or your pets’ needs.

Because the ECS regulates homeostasis, or balance, one is inclined to use the system to our pets’ benefit in the face of disease, pain, behavioral issues, or just to maintain a good quality of life as they age. The question then becomes what product, what dose, and how long should we treat? Research is beginning to provide answers to these questions through recent and ongoing studies regarding arthritis, seizures, and the potential side effects of CBD in animals. These studies provide very promising information and give us guidelines for using CBD as a tool to help our pets achieve and maintain good health.  Until FDA approval for CBD use occurs, we must rely on common sense, available research data, and anecdotal evidence to decide if our pets can benefit from its use.
